How do I send a message to  Lightspeed?

To send a message to all the people currently subscribed to the list, address an e-mail message to INTEGRITY-L@LISTSERV.AMERICAN.EDU.  The LISTSERV will then send a copy of your message to everyone on the list.

You should never send commands to this address. If you do, the command will be ignored by the LISTSERV,  but it may be distributed to all Lightspeed subscribers. This can be embarrassing.

How do I send commands to the LISTSERV?

All commands should be addressed to LISTSERV@LISTSERV.AMERICAN.EDU.  (Note that LISTSERV does not have an "e" on the end!) The LISTSERV is the "robot" that manages Lightspeed and hundreds of similar Internet mailing lists.

All commands should be put in the body of the message. It doesn't matter what you put in the subject field.

How do I use the digest feature?

The default on your Lightspeed subscription is to forward messages to you as soon as they are posted to the list. However, you can receive your Lightspeed mail in digest form if you wish. If you select the digest option, all Lightspeed messages for a single day will be delivered to you as a single combined message at 6:00 every morning. To begin receiving Lightspeed in digest form, send the command SET INTEGRITY-L DIGEST to the LISTSERV. If you decide that you want to go back to the message-by-message format, send the command SET INTEGRITY-L NODIGEST to the LISTSERV.

How do I temporarily suspend my Lightspeed mail?

If you intend to be away for a long period of time, you may wish to stop delivery of your Lightspeed mail. If you don't do this, your electronic mailbox may become full and your messages will start bouncing back to the list. To suspend your Lightspeed mail, send the command SET INTEGRITY-L NOMAIL to the LISTSERV. To restore your Lightspeed mail, send the command SET INTEGRITY-L MAIL to the LISTSERV. Sorry, the LISTSERV will not save Lightspeed mail for you while you are on vacation.

How do I permanently leave the list?

You may leave the list at any time by sending the command SIGNOFF INTEGRITY-L to the LISTSERV. If you sign off Lightspeed, only the Listowner can resubscribe you.

If you are leaving the list because the volume is too high, you may wish to subscribe to INTEGNEWS-L, which is a low-volume, news-only list.

How do I change my subscription address?

If you need to change your subscription address, send an e-mail message to the  Listowner.  You do not have to complete a new subscription form.  However, you should give your old address, your new address, your full name, and your chapter or state.

How can I get more information on Listserv commands?

More information on LISTSERV commands can be found at http://listserv.american.edu/cgi-bin/wa

What should I post to Lightspeed?

We encourage the posting of all news and views that may be of interest to other subscribers.

The discussion of issues, even controversial ones, is encouraged. But we insist upon civility and sensitivity. We try to be good Anglicans. We agree to disagree. We seek light, not heat. We discuss issues, not personalities.  Lightspeed is a flame-free zone.

Private messages--those that are meant for one or two people, rather than for a significant portion of the list--are best handled by addressing them directly to the intended recipient(s) rather than to the entire list.

Files may not be attached to Lightspeed messages. Any attachments will be automatically stripped from your message, or your message may be rejected by the LISTSERV.

Please compose your messages using plain text, rather than HTML or RTF, since text formatting protocols have not yet been standardized.

If you are replying to a message previously posted on the list, please do not include the entire original message in your reply.  You need only include enough of the origin message to remind readers of the context.

If you forward messages to the list from other sources, please  eliminate any headers and footers if your e-mail software allows you do so.  This extra information can be rather annoying, especially if a message has been forwarded a zillion times.

Messages over 1000 lines will be rejected by the LISTSERV.   Large messages may be divided in two or more messages.

How can I protect my privacy on Lightspeed?

Lightspeed is designed to be a safe place in cyberspace for subscribers to communicate. A number of precautions have been taken to ensure this:

To date, these precautions have been highly effective at protecting subscribers. However, no Internet mailing list can be made completely secure from hackers, queer bashers, or plain old gossipmongers. So, those who are not completely "out" should be somewhat cautious.

For your own safety, never provide personal information about yourself to anyone on the Internet unless you have satisfactorily established that person's identity and intentions.

We take the Terms of Subscription very seriously.  Subscribers who violate these terms of subscription will be immediately removed from the list.

If you believe that someone on Lightspeed has violated your the  Terms of Subscription, please notify the Listowner immediately so that he can investigate and correct the problem.

Why aren't I getting mail?

There are two main reasons you may not be receiving mail:

1. Occasionally, the LISTSERV at American University will go offline.  To determine if the LISTSERV is up, send the command THANKS to the LISTSERV.  If the LISTSERV replies "You're welcome!" it is probably operational.  If it does not reply, it is probably down.

2. If your mailbox becomes full, if your Internet account is closed, or if your Internet host goes down, the LISTSERV will send error messages will be sent to the Listowner. Depending on the number and type of error messages, the Listowner may set your subscription to NOMAIL or delete your address from the list.  To determine your status, send the command QUERY INTEGRITY-L to the LISTSERV. If the LISTSERV replies that your subscription is set to NOMAIL, send the command SET INTEGRITY-L MAIL to the LISTSERV.  If the LISTSERV replies that you are not a recognized subscriber, you will need to submit another subscription form

What is a Listowner?

The Listowner is responsible for managing Integrity Lightspeed and helping its subscribers.

If you have suggestions for improving the list, don't hesitate to share them with the Listowner and other Lightspeeders. Also, contact the Listowner if you have any questions about, or problems with, Lightspeed.
