Resolution C014

Title:   Response to Windsor Report

Topic:

Committee:   Special Legislative Committee

House of Initial Action:   Deputies

Proposer:   Diocese of Alabama

Resolved, the House of _____ concurring, That the Episcopal Church, as gathered in the 75th General Convention, is called to be the Body of Christ and Christ’s witness in the world and, as such, we commit to strive for healing and reconciliation as called for in the Windsor Report, remembering that “there is one body and one spirit…one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is above all and through all and in all” (Eph. 4:4-5); and be it further
Resolved, That in response to the request of the Windsor Report we express our corporate regret for having damaged the bonds of affection among us in the Anglican Communion; and be it further
Resolved, That while we acknowledge that there are differences of opinion regarding issues of human sexuality which exist among members of our Province and the Anglican Communion, our spiritual unity in Christ is grounded in the call to “bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ” (Gal. 6:2); and be it further
Resolved, That we commit to bear one another’s burdens, exercising patience, love, discipline, imagination and courage, by participating fully in the listening process as called for in the Windsor Report; and be it further
Resolved, That we call upon each of our dioceses to honor the spirit of the Windsor Report and to be responsive to its recommendations as we actively and prayerfully seek a deeper consensus on these matters; and be it further
Resolved, That we commit to the study of the concept of an Anglican Covenant, including Resolution 11 of the Lambeth Conference of 1888, which will enable us to strengthen our common life and mission and enrich the unity in diversity that we value in the Anglican Communion.

EXPLANATION

This resolution provides a corporate response of the Episcopal Church to the request of the Lambeth Commission on Communion. It is rooted in our desire for healing and reconciliation as urged by the Windsor Report and in the teaching of the New Testament.

Resolution 11 of the Lambeth Conference of 1888 is found on page 877 of the Book of Common Prayer. It comprises the "Chicago-Lambeth Quadrilateral."
